Crowds, Police, and Consumer Inspectors Swarm Transístmica Store Opening Over TV Bargains

What Happened

A heavily promoted electronics sale on Transístmica turned chaotic as dozens of people lined up overnight for televisions advertised from $75 and a promise of “1,000 gifts for the first 1,000 people in line.” The crowd began gathering on Wednesday, May 13, ahead of the store’s official opening on Thursday, May 14.

As customers pushed to get inside, some left carrying televisions while others argued inside and outside the business. Videos shared on social media showed crowds, shoving, and tense exchanges among people trying to enter the store.

Police and Consumer Officials Intervene

Units from the National Police crowd-control division arrived at the scene along with inspectors from the Autoridad de Protección al Consumidor y Defensa de la Competencia, known as Acodeco. During their inspection, Acodeco identified alleged irregularities and drew up a report for suspected misleading advertising, expired products, and items without visible prices.

The consumer authority said the findings were linked to violations of Law 45 of 2007, which establishes consumer protection rules in Panama. The agency also noted the inspection took place at the store where the opening promotion had drawn the large crowd.

Why the Promotion Drew Such a Crowd

The business sits on the Transístmica corridor in a location that previously housed the El Triángulo store and later a furniture shop. It now operates as a discount retailer focused on low-priced merchandise. Deals like these often attract customers looking for electronics below typical market prices, especially in stores that sell excess inventory, liquidation items, discontinued models, or bulk purchases from abroad.

That model has become increasingly popular in Panama, where bargain-hunting shoppers often respond quickly to limited-time promotions and giveaways. In this case, the combination of low prices and free gifts helped trigger a rush that overwhelmed the opening day atmosphere.

Consumer Risks in Flash Sales

Openings like this can highlight the pressure bargain promotions place on both shoppers and store operators. When a sale draws a crowd before doors open, the risk of disorder rises quickly, especially if customers believe supplies are limited. For consumers, the Acodeco findings also underscore the importance of clear pricing, truthful advertising, and product labeling in any retail offer.

For Panama’s consumer market, the scene on Transístmica is another reminder that aggressive promotions can generate both major demand and serious oversight concerns when store conditions and advertising practices do not match expectations.
