Tocumen Boosts Passenger Traffic 15% in First Quarter

What Happened

The International Airport of Tocumen handled more than 5.7 million passengers in the first quarter of the year, a 15% increase compared with the same period last year. The terminal processed 754,213 more travelers than in the first three months of 2025.

Air operations also climbed, with 44,557 flights recorded in the quarter, up 12% year over year. That represents 4,437 additional takeoffs and landings at Panama’s main air hub.

Cargo and Regional Airports Also Grew

In addition to passenger traffic, Tocumen moved 61,194 metric tons of air cargo during the quarter, a 9% increase over 2025. The cargo activity included more than 4,821 import and export movements of goods and mail, underscoring the airport’s role in trade and logistics.

Panama’s regional airports also posted activity during the period. Together, Enrique Malek in David, Panama Pacifico, Scarlett Martínez in Río Hato and Enrique Jiménez in Colón handled 236,682 passengers and 10,552 aircraft movements.

Why It Matters

Tocumen serves as one of the country’s most important international gateways, connecting Panama with more than 90 destinations in South America, Central America, the Caribbean, North America and Europe. The airport operates through 15 passenger airlines and 17 cargo companies, making it a key piece of the country’s transport and commerce infrastructure.

Jose Ruiz Blanco, the airport’s general manager, said the growth reflects a strategy focused on strengthening air connectivity. Rising passenger numbers and cargo volumes point to sustained demand for Panama’s aviation hub and its supporting regional network.

For Panama, stronger traffic at Tocumen can reinforce tourism, business travel and logistics flows, while also supporting the country’s position as a regional transit center. The quarterly figures suggest continued momentum for an airport that plays a central role in both mobility and international trade.
