Quiroz and Saavedra join Panama baseball’s elite 800-hit club

Historic Night in the Semifinals

Carlos Xavier Quiroz and Jonathan Saavedra carved out a place in Panama’s baseball history after each reached 800 hits in the Campeonato Nacional de Béisbol Mayor. The milestone came during Chiriquí’s 8-7 extra-inning win over Panamá Oeste on Sunday, April 12, at Estadio Kenny Serracín, in the opening game of the semifinal series.

With their latest hits, both players joined an exclusive club that had previously included only Rodolfo “Candelilla” Aparicio, the longtime standard-bearer with 831 career hits. The achievement added extra weight to an already dramatic playoff night and gave Chiriquí a memorable start to the series.

Quiroz Reaches the Mark First

Quiroz became the first of the two to reach the milestone, doing so in front of the home crowd in David. The first baseman’s 800th hit placed him among the most productive hitters in the history of Panama’s top amateur baseball competition, further strengthening a career already defined by consistency and production.

After the game, Quiroz expressed his appreciation for Aparicio and for the guidance he has received over the years. He called the milestone emotional and said reaching that number is not easy, underscoring how rare the achievement is in the national tournament.

Saavedra Adds Another Landmark

Saavedra followed soon after, becoming the third player in the history of the tournament to reach 800 hits. His achievement turned the semifinal opener into a double celebration for Chiriquí, which not only secured a close extra-innings victory but also saw two of its veterans enter the record books on the same night.

Saavedra dedicated the milestone to the fans and to his family, highlighting the personal meaning of the moment. His place in the history of the competition is backed by a resume that already puts him among the most accomplished hitters of his era.

Records That Go Beyond Hits

The significance of both players extends well beyond the 800-hit plateau. Quiroz is also second all-time in doubles with 152 and third in runs batted in with 452. Saavedra leads the historical doubles list with 154 and ranks second in RBIs with 454.

Those numbers help explain why both players are regarded as pillars of Chiriquí’s lineup and as major figures in Panama’s baseball history. Their latest milestones reinforce the depth of their careers and the impact they have had on the national game.
