What Happened

Portobelo will host the seventh Festival de la Pollera Congo on May 2, beginning at 10:00 a.m., in a celebration centered on Afro-Panamanian heritage, music, food and community life.

The event is being organized with support from Panama’s Ministry of Culture and the Patronato de la Pollera Congo. Festivities will take place in landmark spaces including the Museo de la Aduana Real and the town’s main plaza, turning one of Colón province’s most historic districts into a stage for traditional expression.

A Celebration of Living Heritage

The opening of the festival will feature a fair bringing together artisans, entrepreneurs and local tradition-bearers. The program also includes a special tribute to the memory of Congo queen Catalina, a figure remembered for her place in the cultural history of the Congo community.

The day’s schedule reflects the importance of oral memory, performance and craftsmanship in preserving Afrocolonial identity. In Portobelo, those traditions remain closely tied to local celebrations that keep generations connected to their cultural roots.

Parades, Music and the Bay

One of the most anticipated moments will be the afternoon parade through the streets of Portobelo, followed by a colorful aquatic procession in the bay. That combination of land and water festivities has become one of the most distinctive elements of the celebration.

More than 25 Congo groups are expected to take part on the main stage, filling the town with drum rhythms, singing and dance. The festival highlights a tradition recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, underscoring its significance not only in Panama but also on the world stage.

Why It Matters

The Festival de la Pollera Congo serves as more than a cultural showcase. It is a public expression of Afrodescendant identity in Panama and a platform for preserving practices that have been passed down through generations.

By bringing together artists, community members and cultural institutions in Portobelo, the event reinforces pride in a heritage rooted in resistance, creativity and collective memory. It also offers a high-profile opportunity for younger generations to engage with traditions that continue to shape Panama’s cultural identity.

Year after year, the festival has grown into a key date on Portobelo’s cultural calendar, drawing attention to one of the country’s most emblematic traditions and to the communities that sustain it.
