What Happened
Panama enjoyed a breakthrough day in wrestling at the IV South American Youth Games 2026, winning its first two gold medals of the competition through Yumaira Rusell and Aisha Williams. Mia Arrocha added a silver, lifting the national total to five medals after three days of action.
The strong wrestling results pushed Panama from seventh place to fifth in the overall medal table. The country now trails only Venezuela, Brazil, Argentina, and Colombia, all of which have three or more gold medals.
Rusell Delivers a Golden Run at 65 Kilograms
Yumaira Rusell stood out in the women’s 65-kilogram freestyle division with a composed and efficient path to the title. She opened with a win by fall over Chile’s Fernanda Riffo, then advanced past Brazil’s Maria Luciano with an 8-5 points victory in a tighter semifinal.
In the final, Rusell controlled the match from start to finish and defeated Ecuador’s Allison Ojeda 9-2 on points to secure Panama’s first gold medal of the Games. Her run showed a combination of power, discipline, and tactical control across each round.
Williams Adds Panama’s Second Gold
Aisha Williams followed with another dominant performance in the 73-kilogram category. She began by beating Argentina’s Selena Cabral 10-0 by technical superiority, the type of win awarded when one wrestler builds an overwhelming points advantage.
Williams then defeated Ecuador’s Geovanna Sevillano by fall and later pinned Peru’s Chelse Carhuallanqui in the semifinal to reach the title bout with momentum. In the final, she faced Venezuela’s Perla Peña in a more competitive match but managed the pace well enough to win 7-4 on points and claim gold for Panama.
Arrocha Earns Silver in 57 Kilograms
Mia Arrocha completed Panama’s medal haul for the day with a silver in the 57-kilogram division. She reached the final but fell by fall to Colombia’s Alejandra Serrano, who had already defeated her in the group stage.
Even with the final loss, Arrocha’s silver added to a productive day for Panama’s wrestling team and reinforced the sport’s importance to the country’s medal push at the youth continental event.
Why It Matters
The results mark one of Panama’s strongest days early in the competition and provide a major boost to the delegation’s standing. With two golds in one session, wrestling emerged as the key driver behind Panama’s rise in the medal table and showed that young Panamanian athletes can contend with the region’s best on a major stage.
