What Happened
Panama’s Under-20 national team has been placed in Pot 2 for the draw of the 2026 Concacaf U-20 Championship, the regional tournament that will be held in Mexico from July 24 to August 9.
The placement puts Panama among the second tier of teams in the competition, alongside Cuba and Guatemala, based on the confederation ranking as of October 2025. That means the team will avoid being seeded as a group favorite, but it remains in position to challenge for one of the four World Cup places on offer.
The official draw is set for Thursday, May 7, in Miami at 10:00 a.m. Panama time, when the groups and match schedule will be defined.
Panama’s Road Under Mike Stump
Mike Stump now leads the Panamanian squad after being appointed by the Panamanian Football Federation on April 18. He replaced Jorge Dely Valdés, who had overseen the program through October 2025.
Stump arrives with recent success in Panama’s youth setup after guiding the country to the Under-17 World Cup in Indonesia in 2023. His task is to shape a competitive Under-20 team capable of extending Panama’s strong recent presence in youth football.
Panama is aiming to return to a FIFA Under-20 World Cup after previous appearances in 2003, 2005, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2025. A place in the semifinal round of the Concacaf tournament will secure qualification to the 2027 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.
What the Tournament Means
The Concacaf U-20 Championship will bring together 12 of the region’s top national teams, split into three groups of four. Along with the World Cup tickets, the champion will also earn direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
Panama’s pool of players is being evaluated through the Liga Panameña de Fútbol, Liga Prom, and several players from the Under-17 cycle. The technical staff is also tracking names with recent international experience, including players who featured at the 2025 World Cup in Qatar under Argentine coach Leonardo Pipino.
Panama’s recent youth record adds context to the challenge ahead. The team finished runner-up at both the 2025 Central American Games and the 2025 UNCAF tournament in the Under-19 category, results that underline the level of competition Stump inherits as the team prepares for Mexico.
With the draw approaching, Panama now awaits its group opponents and the path it will need to navigate to reach another youth World Cup.
