Swiss financier killed in Juan Díaz shooting near Corredor Sur

What Happened

Miguel González, a Swiss-born financier who operated Firmus Financial Inc., was shot and killed Wednesday morning in Llano Bonito, in the Juan Díaz district near the Corredor Sur in Panama City.

Investigators say González was being followed by two vehicles before one of them cut him off. Four men got out of the vehicle, wearing vests and caps similar to those used by the Judicial Investigation Directorate, and opened fire.

His gray Kia Sportage was hit more than 30 times, suggesting the use of automatic weapons. Residents in the area reported hearing a heavy burst of gunfire.

Who González Was

González had lived in Panama for several years and worked in financial advisory services. His offices were located in the Financial Park Tower in Costa del Este, a business district that houses corporate and professional firms.

He was also associated with Firmus Financial Inc., adding to the profile of a killing that has drawn attention because of the victim’s background in finance and the apparent planning behind the attack.

Investigation Underway

Authorities were reviewing surveillance cameras to identify the attackers and reconstruct the route taken before and after the shooting. The use of clothing resembling law-enforcement gear has raised questions about how the assailants approached the victim and whether the disguise was meant to reduce suspicion during the ambush.

At this stage, investigators have not publicly established who carried out the killing or why González was targeted. The attack adds to concerns about violent crimes committed in busy urban areas and near major traffic corridors in Panama City.

Wider Context

Panama has previously seen cases involving Swiss nationals linked to finance. In August 2018, Hans Jorg Boch disappeared without a trace, and years of searches across the country failed to resolve the case. In 2001, remains initially identified as Boch were later ruled out by a second DNA test conducted by Swiss authorities.

The latest killing is likely to intensify scrutiny of security around business figures and the risks faced by people operating in Panama’s financial sector. It also underscores the impact of high-profile violence in areas close to key transport routes and commercial neighborhoods in the capital.
