Panama Metro begins dynamic testing on Line 3 monorail

What Happened

Panama Metro has begun dynamic testing on the Line 3 monorail with a first run carried out Monday afternoon between Patio y Talleres and the Ciudad del Futuro station in Panama Oeste. The test marks a major step in the project’s path toward service, as the system moves from construction toward operational readiness.

Dynamic tests are used to assess how the train performs while in motion and to check the coordination of electrical, signaling and control systems. The first run is part of a broader verification process designed to support safe and reliable service for future riders.

Why Line 3 Matters

Officials estimate that Line 3 will serve an initial demand of 160,000 passengers a day, including around 16,000 users per hour during peak periods. The line is expected to become a significant mobility option for residents of Panama Oeste, where traffic congestion has long affected daily commutes.

The project will connect Albrook with Ciudad del Futuro and pass through areas including Arraiján and Nuevo Chorrillo. In its first phase, the line will stretch 25 kilometers and include 11 stations.

Progress Across the Project

The elevated section of the line is now 81% complete and links Panamá Pacífico with Ciudad del Futuro. Technical crews are also preparing to begin static tests on that section, adding another step in the commissioning process.

The underground phase, which includes the tunnel beneath the Panama Canal, has reached 42% progress. The tunnel itself is 53% complete, underscoring the scale of one of the country’s most ambitious transport projects.

What This Means for Panama Oeste

Line 3 is being developed as one of the most important mobility projects in the country. By creating a faster transit option between western Panama and the capital area, the monorail is expected to ease pressure on roads that regularly face heavy congestion.

The start of dynamic testing signals that the project is entering a more advanced stage, with the focus now shifting from construction milestones to system performance and integration. For commuters in Panama Oeste, the line represents a future alternative aimed at shortening travel times and improving daily connectivity.
