Panama seizes 999 drug packages in Pacific port container bound for Peru

What Happened

Panama’s National Aeronaval Service seized 999 packages containing drugs at a Pacific port after intelligence work led officers to detect irregularities in the security seal of a container.

The container was traveling from the port of Charleston in the United States, transiting through Panama, and had El Callao, Peru, as its final destination. Authorities said the container was inspected after the anomaly was identified.

How the Operation Unfolded

The operation was carried out with coordination from the Public Ministry. During the inspection, officers counted 20 suitcases carrying the illicit cargo inside the container.

The seizure underscores Panama’s role as a transit point in international trafficking routes, particularly in cargo moving through its ports. The country’s location between major shipping corridors makes its maritime terminals a frequent target for concealment methods involving containers and altered security seals.

Year-to-Date Drug Seizures

With this latest operation, the National Aeronaval Service said it has seized 25,561 packages of illicit substances so far in 2026. Those seizures were made in 31 operations carried out in different parts of the country.

The figures reflect continued pressure on Panamanian authorities to monitor ports, inspect shipping containers, and coordinate across institutions in response to narcotics trafficking. Operations like this one are part of a broader effort to disrupt the movement of drugs through Panama’s logistics network.

Broader Context

Panama’s Pacific ports play a central role in regional trade, but that same connectivity also creates opportunities for criminal groups that hide drugs in legitimate cargo. Container inspections, seal verification, and intelligence-led operations remain key tools in counter-narcotics enforcement.

The latest seizure adds to a growing tally of drug interceptions in 2026 and highlights the continuing challenge of protecting Panama’s maritime trade routes from illicit use.
