What Happened

The Municipality of Panama City has called a public hearing for Friday, April 10 at 3:00 p.m. at Parque Urracá, where residents will learn about an agreement that sets fees for the use of facilities in the public space.

The hearing is aimed at giving citizens direct access to the terms governing the park’s installations, in a venue that is both central and widely used by the community.

About Parque Urracá

Parque Urracá is located in the Bella Vista corregimiento and covers 21,800 square meters. The park was created after the Canal Company filled in a swampy area in 1918, turning the land into a public space for recreation and community activity.

The park takes its name from Cacique Urracá, the indigenous leader remembered as a symbol of resistance to Spanish colonization. Today, it serves as a sports and cultural hub, with playing fields, a children’s playground, and a space for cultural activities.

Why the Hearing Matters

Public hearings on the use of municipal facilities can affect how residents, community groups, and event organizers access shared spaces. In a park as established and visible as Parque Urracá, the discussion over fees is especially relevant because the site functions as both a neighborhood amenity and a broader urban landmark.

For Panama City, the hearing also reflects the administration’s effort to present rules for the use of public infrastructure in a transparent setting, allowing citizens to become familiar with how one of the capital’s most recognizable parks will be managed.

Urban and Community Context

Parque Urracá remains one of the city’s important green areas and an open-air gathering point in Bella Vista. Its mix of recreation, sports, and cultural use makes it part of daily life for many residents and a key piece of the capital’s public space network.

The hearing places that role in focus, as the city weighs how to organize access to its facilities while preserving the park’s use as a public asset.
