Panama Approves $17.7 Million to Keep New Children’s Hospital on Track

What Happened

The National Assembly’s Budget Committee approved a $17.7 million budget transfer requested by Deputy Health Minister Manuel Zambrano Chang to cover pending payments tied to construction of the new Dr. José Renán Esquivel Children’s Hospital.

The money will go to Acciona Construcción S.A., the company in charge of building the project, which has become one of the country’s most important health infrastructure works. Officials warned that without the payment, the project could face delays that would affect the planned schedule.

A Major Health Project

The new hospital represents an investment of $446.3 million. The original estimate was $443.8 million, but lawmakers approved a $2.5 million addendum last year to cover unforeseen issues, including infrastructure not initially budgeted for at the site of the former United States embassy.

The hospital is designed to become a major pediatric care center with 476 beds and specialized services in radiology, hematology, laboratories, emergency care, imaging, and comprehensive cancer treatment. The complex will also include spaces intended to improve patient flow, as well as areas for teaching and research.

Why the Funding Matters

Approving the transfer gives the Ministry of Health room to keep the project moving and reduce the risk of interruptions in the months ahead. For Panama’s health system, the hospital is expected to strengthen pediatric care capacity and provide more advanced treatment options for children and adolescents needing specialized attention.

The project also reflects the government’s broader push to expand and modernize public health infrastructure in the capital. Once completed, the hospital is expected to serve as a key reference center for complex pediatric cases, including patients requiring cancer care and other specialized services.

What Comes Next

With the funds approved, the Ministry of Health can proceed with the pending obligations linked to the construction contract. The move helps preserve continuity in a project that has drawn attention because of its size, cost, and importance to public health in Panama.
