Luis Sáez Takes Another Shot at Kentucky Derby History with Commandment

What Happened

Panamanian jockey Luis Sáez will return to Churchill Downs this Saturday for the 152nd Kentucky Derby, riding Commandment in Louisville. The 32-year-old Darién native is set for his sixth consecutive run in the most prestigious race on the U.S. horse-racing calendar, still chasing his first Derby victory.

Sáez enters the race with one of his strongest opportunities yet. Commandment arrives with four wins in five starts and has already captured major prep races, including the Florida Derby and the Fountain of Youth Stakes. Those results have placed the colt among the leading contenders in a field capped at 20 horses.

A Career Defined by Near Misses

The Panamanian rider’s most recent Derby efforts have shown consistency without a breakthrough. He finished third aboard Essential Quality in 2021, his best result in the race so far, and later rode Charge It in 2022, Tapit Trice in 2023, Dornoch in 2024, and Neoequos in 2025.

His name remains closely tied to one of the most dramatic moments in Derby history. In 2019, Sáez crossed the wire first aboard Maximum Security, only for the horse to be disqualified for interference. The decision denied him a celebrated Derby win and turned that race into a defining chapter in his career.

Why Commandment Matters

Commandment offers Sáez another legitimate chance to reach the finish line he has long pursued. The horse is owned by Wathnan Racing and trained by Brad Cox, who again turned to the Panamanian jockey for the race. Sáez said the colt is intelligent, handles distance well, and appears suited to the Derby’s demands.

He also noted the horse’s competitive nature in tight situations, describing a runner that responds when challenged. That kind of temperament can matter in a race known for traffic, pressure, and split-second decisions at a packed Churchill Downs.

The Bigger Picture

For Panama, Sáez’s return to the Derby keeps one of the country’s most recognizable names on a global stage. His presence in the starting gate again highlights the reach of Panamanian riders in international horse racing, where he has built a career among elite competition in the United States.

Sáez made clear how much the race still means to him, calling it the one every jockey wants to win. He also reflected on his 2021 run with Essential Quality, saying that a clean trip is often the key in races of this magnitude. That insight will be central once the gates open and the field charges toward the first turn.

The 2026 Kentucky Derby is scheduled for Saturday, May 2, at 5:57 p.m. Panama time. Commandment is listed at 6-1 odds, behind only Renegade at 4-1, giving Sáez another real chance to turn years of persistence into Derby glory.
