What Happened
Copa Airlines announced an ambitious expansion plan that calls for a 14% increase in available seat capacity in 2026, along with growth in its fleet, passenger traffic and route network over the next four years. The Panamanian carrier said the expansion is designed to support stronger connectivity through Panama and create thousands of new jobs.
Pedro Heilbron, chief executive of Copa Airlines, said the airline expects to reach 20.9 million passengers in 2026 and more than 27 million passengers within four years. The company also plans to raise its daily flight count from 370 to 500 by 2029.
Fleet and Route Expansion
Heilbron said the airline added more than 13 destinations over the past year. By the end of 2026, Copa expects to operate 121 aircraft and still has 43 Boeing 737 MAX planes scheduled for delivery through 2029.
He also said the airline expects to make another announcement later this month about a new aircraft purchase agreement. The planned fleet growth is intended to support the airline’s operational expansion in the years ahead and reinforce its regional network from Panama.
Impact on Employment in Panama
The expansion is expected to bring a major employment boost in Panama. Copa said it projects about 400 new direct jobs in the country this year, plus another 1,000 hires to support natural turnover in the operation, including retirements.
The new positions will span operational staff, cabin crew, pilots, aviation mechanics and administrative roles. Over the next four years, the airline expects its growth plan to generate more than 2,100 direct jobs in Panama.
Training the Next Generation
Copa also highlighted the role of its training academies in supporting the expansion. For 2026, ALAS, the airline’s pilot academy, expects to graduate around 65 Panamanian pilots. The Aeronautical Technicians Academy is set to train 50 technicians, while the Cabin Crew Academy expects to graduate 415 new professionals by the end of the year.
Heilbron said sustaining a strong route network, a modern fleet and talent development is essential as competition for connectivity grows in the region. For Panama, the expansion underscores the airline’s role as a major employer and a key link in the country’s air transport sector.
