What Happened
Chiriquí pulled off a dramatic 7-6 walk-off win over Veraguas on Friday night in the decisive fifth game of their series at Kenny Serracín Stadium, keeping its title hopes alive in the Campeonato Nacional de Béisbol Mayor.
Joans Montenegro scored the winning run in the 10th inning on a ground ball to shortstop by Jorge Rodríguez, sparking a celebration from the home crowd and sending Chiriquí into the semifinals.
A Game Full of Lead Changes
The matchup swung back and forth throughout the night. Chiriquí struck first when Erasmo Caballero doubled in the opening inning, but Veraguas answered in the third on a hit by Miguel Atencio to tie the game.
Veraguas briefly went ahead 2-1 in the fourth inning on a single by Moisés Batista, only for Chiriquí to respond immediately. Jeffer Patiño delivered a hit in the bottom of the inning to turn the score around and give the home side a 3-2 lead.
Jhony Santos extended that edge in the seventh with a solo home run to left field, putting Chiriquí up 4-2. But Veraguas refused to go away, rallying in the ninth to tie the game 4-4 and force extra innings.
The Decisive 10th Inning
Veraguas seized a 6-4 lead in the top of the 10th after a productive ground ball from Adolfo Reina and a wild pitch by Ernesto Silva that allowed another run to score. Chiriquí answered again in the bottom half.
Jonathan Saavedra brought in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Iraj Serrano followed with a hit that allowed Arturo Andrade to score the tying run at 6-6. With runners on, Rodríguez then put the ball in play and Montenegro crossed home plate with the winning run.
Pitching and Key Performers
Ernesto Silva earned the win after working 1 2/3 innings and allowing one unearned run. Gilberto Chu also played a major role out of the bullpen, throwing five scoreless innings. Israel Mendoza took the loss for Veraguas.
At the plate, Caballero and Santos each finished with two hits for Chiriquí, while Patiño drove in two runs. The home team also drew eight walks, showing patience that helped keep pressure on Veraguas throughout the contest.
Veraguas finished with 13 hits, including two-hit performances from Álvaro Guevara, Erick Mordock and Miguel Atencio, but the offense could not complete the comeback.
What This Means
The victory sends Chiriquí into the semifinals against Panamá Oeste. In the other semifinal, defending champion Bocas del Toro will face Colón.
After the game, Jeffer Patiño said to Radio Chiriquí that, following conversations with the provincial league, he has decided to postpone his retirement from national championships until 2027.
