What Happened
Chiriquí moved to within one victory of reaching the Serie Final of Panama’s Campeonato Nacional de Béisbol Mayor after defeating Panamá Oeste 7-4 at Estadio Mariano Rivera on Thursday night. The win gave the Chiriquí squad a decisive boost in the semifinal series and put it one step away from clinching a place in the championship round.
Chiriquí set the tone early, responding to a scoreless stretch in the previous game by jumping on the offense from the start. With one out and a runner on first, Carlos Quirós singled to left field to put runners on the corners. Erasmo Caballero then drew a walk to load the bases, and Jonathan Saavedra followed with a double to center field that drove in the first three runs.
How Chiriquí Pulled Away
Panamá Oeste answered quickly with a run in the bottom of the first, as Johan Camargo doubled to center to bring home Jean Rodríguez. The home team later tied the game with runs in the third and fourth innings, keeping the contest tight through the middle frames.
Chiriquí regained control in the sixth inning when Jorge Rodríguez singled to drive in Ariel Serrano from second base. The visitors then broke the game open in the eighth with three more runs. Jhony Santos doubled to left to add one, and Jeffer Patiño capped the rally with a hit to center that brought in two additional runs and pushed the score to 7-3.
Panamá Oeste scored once more in the eighth inning, but the late push was not enough to erase the gap.
Parallel Series In Colón
At the same time on the Atlantic coast, Colón and Bocas del Toro were playing Game 3 of their semifinal series at Estadio Calvin Byron. Bocas del Toro won 5-2 to take a 2-1 lead in the series and assure itself of at least a return home to continue the matchup.
Bocas del Toro opened with three runs in the second inning on an RBI single by Edwin Walden, which scored Eduardo Tolo, Jonathan Mendoza and Héctor Rayo. Colón responded with two runs in the third, but the game remained close until the eighth inning, when Héctor Rayo delivered a fly ball to left field that drove in two runs and sealed the win.
What Comes Next
The next round of games could shape the championship picture. Chiriquí visits Panamá Oeste for Game 5, where it can become the first team to secure a berth in the Serie Final. In the other semifinal, Colón hosts Bocas del Toro at Estadio Roberto Mariano Bula in a game scheduled for 7:00 p.m., while Chiriquí and Panamá Oeste are set to play at 7:00 p.m. at Estadio Mariano Rivera.
The semifinal stage has now become a test of depth, timely hitting and late-inning execution, with each team trying to translate pressure into a place in Panama’s national baseball title series.
