Panama City to celebrate Casco Peatonal anniversary with food, family activities and free soup

What Happened

Panama City will mark the first anniversary of Casco Peatonal this Sunday, April 26, with a day of family-friendly activities in the historic district. The celebration will run from 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and will center on the San Felipe Neri Market, one of the area’s best-known public spaces.

A key draw of the event will be the distribution of 1,500 free soups at the market starting at noon. Earlier in the morning, from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., visitors will also be able to enjoy a gastronomic route featuring fritangas and traditional Panamanian flavors.

A Celebration of Local Food and Community

The event is designed as a weekend outing for families, friends, young people and tourists. By placing food and open-air activities at the center of the celebration, organizers are highlighting the role of public spaces in everyday city life and in preserving local culinary traditions.

San Felipe Neri has long been part of the city’s commercial and social fabric, and the anniversary celebration adds another layer of activity to the historic district. The mix of street food, market vendors and public gathering spaces is intended to create a lively atmosphere that invites residents and visitors to spend time in the area.

Impact on the Historic District

The event also supports entrepreneurs and restaurants in different commercial sectors by drawing more foot traffic to the Casco area. For small businesses, a large public celebration can mean greater visibility and increased sales, especially in a district known for tourism, dining and cultural visits.

Beyond the immediate economic boost, the anniversary aims to strengthen tourism and civic coexistence in one of Panama City’s most recognizable neighborhoods. Casco Peatonal has become a way to promote pedestrian-friendly use of the historic center, encouraging residents to experience the district on foot and engage with its public spaces.

Why It Matters

Events like this reflect a wider effort to keep downtown Panama City active through cultural programming and community participation. A celebration built around traditional food and shared public space can help reinforce the identity of the historic district while supporting local commerce at the same time.

For Panama City residents, the anniversary offers a chance to enjoy a full day of activities in a central location. For visitors, it provides a snapshot of local customs, neighborhood life and the role that markets continue to play in the capital’s urban culture.
