U.S. Army engineers begin safety check on Panama’s Bridge of the Americas after fire

What Happened

A team of U.S. Army engineers began a technical inspection on Friday, April 10, at the Bridge of the Americas after the fire and explosion that struck its base earlier in the week. The review is focused on determining whether the structure remains safe for traffic, which is currently restricted to vehicles weighing up to 10 tons.

The inspection is being carried out as part of international cooperation and is taking place voluntarily alongside Panama’s Ministry of Public Works and other national entities. The team includes two structural engineers and two support specialists tasked with producing an independent assessment of the bridge’s condition.

Why the Inspection Was Ordered

The evaluation follows the incident on Monday, April 6, when three fuel tankers were involved in an explosion beneath the bridge. The blaze generated extreme heat and a large fireball that reached the upper roadway, forcing a temporary closure of the crossing.

That event raised concern about possible damage to the bridge’s steel and concrete components. Because the Bridge of the Americas is one of the country’s most important connections between Panama City and the interior, its condition has immediate implications for mobility and commerce.

How the Technical Review Is Being Carried Out

Initial checks were already completed on Tuesday, April 7, by technicians from the Ministry of Public Works. Those early evaluations indicated that no serious structural damage had been detected, but the international review is intended to strengthen the technical diagnosis and confirm whether the bridge can safely return to normal use.

The work includes structural analysis, field measurements, and on-site verification of critical points. Officials are also planning laboratory testing and sample collection from metal exposed to heat, which will be sent to specialized centers in the United States for further study. Strain gauges will be installed in key areas of the structure to monitor deformation.

What the Bridge Means for Panama

Opened in 1962, the Bridge of the Americas has served for more than 63 years as a vital crossing linking the capital with the rest of the country. Its role makes any disruption a national transportation issue, especially when weight limits are in place and traffic flow is constrained.

Edwin Lewis, director of Study and Design at the Ministry of Public Works, said the additional testing is necessary to determine the effects of the fire with greater precision. The specialists are expected to present a technical report next week, which will help authorities decide whether to maintain restrictions, fully reopen the bridge, or order further intervention.

For now, the inspection marks a key step in determining the bridge’s long-term safety after one of the most serious incidents it has faced in years.
