Bridge of the Americas Closed After Fire as Engineers Launch Safety Inspection

What Happened

Panama’s Ministry of Public Works ordered the closure of the Bridge of the Americas after a tanker truck caught fire on Monday afternoon. The bridge will remain closed while engineers carry out a patological inspection to determine whether the blaze caused damage that could affect the structure’s safety.

Public Works Minister José Luis Andrade said the evaluation is set to begin at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 7, with findings expected later in the afternoon. The closure was announced as a preventive measure while specialists assess the extent of the heat exposure on the bridge.

What a Patological Inspection Involves

Engineer Edwin Lewis of the Ministry of Public Works explained that a patological inspection is a deep technical review designed to measure the real impact of the fire on the bridge, which has more than 60 years of service. The goal is to determine whether any part of the structure suffered damage severe enough to compromise its integrity.

Lewis said safety is the priority and that engineers will examine the metal structure in daylight to better understand the effect of the flames. He warned that if the steel was exposed to extreme temperatures, some elements could suffer partial or total failure in the affected section.

How Engineers Will Assess the Damage

The inspection will begin with a visual review of the structure to identify visible fire damage. Teams will then use temperature measurements and thermography to detect hidden effects of the heat. After that, they will conduct non-destructive tests on the concrete, collect samples, and carry out on-site evaluations with specialized personnel and safety gear.

The inspection will also examine the concrete slab, carbon-fiber reinforcements installed about 10 years ago, as well as rivets and connections that may have been affected by the fire.

Who Is Taking Part

Specialists from the Ministry of Public Works and the Panama Canal Authority will participate in the process. They will be joined by a consulting firm hired by both institutions, which is already developing an assessment of the bridge as part of future repair work.

The Bridge of the Americas is one of Panama’s most important crossings, connecting key traffic routes between the capital and the western part of the country. Any prolonged closure can affect mobility, freight movement, and daily commutes, making a rapid but thorough safety review essential.

For now, officials are focusing on confirming whether the fire left any structural weakness before reopening the bridge to vehicles.
