Two Minors Detained After Avenida Balboa Robbery of Foreign Visitors

What Happened

Panamanian police detained two minors, ages 15 and 17, in connection with the robbery of foreign visitors on Avenida Balboa in Panama City. The arrests came after a series of raids carried out in Curundú on Thursday, May 7.

Police said the operations began on Wednesday night and continued into the early hours of Thursday. The two teenagers were transferred to the custody of the Adolescent Prosecutor’s Office, where authorities will determine the precautionary measures they may face in the case of alleged aggravated robbery.

Authorities also said a third person remains under a court order for detention and is still at large, although investigators already have that person’s identity.

How the Investigation Advanced

The arrests followed the investigation into the violent incident reported on Monday night, May 4, when three people confronted a foreign couple, forced them to the ground and stole their belongings. The robbery was captured on security video and quickly spread across social media.

The operation involved the National Police and the Public Ministry, reflecting the urgency of the case and the focus on crimes affecting visitors in one of the capital’s most visible areas. Avenida Balboa is one of Panama City’s busiest corridors and a prominent route for residents, tourists and businesses.

Tourism Concerns After the Attack

The case prompted concern from the Panamanian Association of Hotels, which warned about the possible impact on the country’s image as a safe destination. The hotel sector emphasized that safety remains central to tourism and that incidents like this can weaken years of joint public and private efforts to strengthen Panama’s reputation among international travelers.

Security along Avenida Balboa has already been reinforced because of the area’s heavy pedestrian traffic and high number of visitors. The robbery adds pressure on authorities to maintain visible policing in places that are both symbolic and economically important for the capital.

Why It Matters

Beyond the immediate criminal case, the arrests highlight the broader challenge of protecting tourists in central Panama City. Avenida Balboa is a landmark promenade and a key image of the capital, so crimes there can resonate well beyond the neighborhood itself.

For Panama’s tourism industry, every high-profile incident carries reputational risk. The response from police and prosecutors will be closely watched as authorities work to advance the case and reassure residents and visitors that public security remains a priority.
