Panama sets May calendar to celebrate Afro-Panamanian heritage nationwide

What Happened

Panama has unveiled the 2026 calendar for Afropanameñidad, a monthlong program of parades, cultural showcases, food fairs, fashion events, and educational activities designed to honor the roots and legacy of the country’s Afro-descendant population.

The celebrations begin on May 1 with the raising of the Afro flag at the Sydney Young Center in Río Abajo and the commemoration of Turban Day. That same day, Nombre de Dios in Colón will pay tribute to Vicente Corpa, recognized as a guardian of the tradition of mirror devils.

The first weekend brings some of the most popular events. On May 2, Saus Fest & Food will take place at the Afro-Antillean Path in Río Abajo, while Portobelo, Colón, will host the seventh Pollera Congo Festival.

Culture, Fashion and Identity

The program also highlights fashion and cultural identity through events such as the “Ébano en Movimiento” runway show on May 5 at the University of Panama and African Fashion Week Panama 2026, scheduled for May 16.

Several dates tied to Afro-Panamanian identity will be marked with workshops and activities. May 18, Day of the Braids, and May 25, African Liberation Day, will include events in provinces such as Colón and Los Santos.

These observances place Afro-Panamanian traditions in the spotlight through clothing, hairstyles, music, food, and community gatherings that reflect the diversity of the country’s cultural heritage.

Parades Across the Country

The calendar includes major parades and public events in several regions. In Azuero, the Second Great Afro-Azuero Parade will be held in La Villa de Los Santos on May 8. In Panama City, Río Abajo will host the Ethnic Black Parade on May 17, followed by the 1,000 African Outfits Parade on May 24.

Aguadulce, in Coclé province, will feature talks on African heritage and its first Afro parade on May 29. In Chiriquí, Puerto Armuelles will join the celebrations with activities and parades on May 16 and May 29.

The month will close on May 30, National Day of Afropanameñidad, with the Great Ethnic Black Parade in Colón. The program ends on May 31 with an Afro mass at the Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica.

Why It Matters

Beyond the festivities, the calendar includes discussion spaces focused on human rights and conversations about racial discrimination in schools. The broader goal is to deepen social awareness while recognizing the historical contribution of Afro-Panamanians to the nation’s identity.

By spreading events across multiple provinces, the 2026 calendar turns Afropanameñidad into a nationwide celebration rather than a single-day observance, linking heritage, public memory, and civic education throughout May.
