What Happened
A man died early Tuesday, May 12, after being struck by a vehicle while trying to cross the Arraiján–La Chorrera Highway. The incident happened during the madrugada, a period when visibility is often lower and traffic can still be moving at speed.
A woman was also injured in the same incident and was taken to Nicolás A. Solano Hospital for medical attention.
Road Safety Concerns
The Arraiján–La Chorrera Highway is one of the most heavily traveled routes in western Panama, connecting residential areas and key transit corridors used daily by commuters, freight traffic, and public transport. Collisions involving pedestrians on high-speed roads remain a serious concern, especially where people attempt to cross outside designated crossings.
Incidents like this highlight the risks faced by pedestrians along major highways and the importance of caution from both drivers and people crossing the road. In areas with fast-moving traffic, even a brief mistake can have fatal consequences.
Local Impact
The death adds to the toll of traffic incidents on Panama’s road network, where congestion, speed, and pedestrian exposure continue to create dangerous conditions. Emergency response and hospital care remain essential in managing the aftermath of these crashes.
For residents and motorists in the Arraiján and La Chorrera corridor, the case is another reminder of how vulnerable pedestrians can be on major roadways that were not designed for foot traffic.
