Varela Hermanos Unveils a Premium Cristalino Version of Seco Herrerano

What Happened

Varela Hermanos, Panama’s leading liquor producer, has launched Seco Herrerano Reposado Cristalino, a new premium expression of the country’s best-known sugarcane spirit. The release adds a more refined interpretation to a brand that has been part of Panamanian celebrations for 75 years.

The new product is made from the same 100% sugarcane juice distillate that defines Seco Herrerano, but the production process now includes two additional elements: wood and time. After distillation in a four-column system, the spirit rests in French oak vats and is then double-filtered with charcoal.

A New Step for a National Brand

Seco Herrerano has long been tied to everyday life in Panama, from major celebrations to more casual gatherings. Varela Hermanos positioned the new Cristalino release as a premium expression that keeps the drink’s identity intact while presenting it in a more elegant form.

Company president and CEO Luis J. Varela Jr. described the development as a challenge that aimed to create something distinctly Panamanian. He said the French oak and extended resting period transformed the sugarcane spirit into a product that reflects a more cosmopolitan and sophisticated Panama while remaining faithful to its roots.

How It Is Being Positioned

The launch is being promoted under the slogan “The magic of oak. The art of time.” The bottle will be sold in Panama for $24 at specialized stores, placing it in a higher-end segment than the classic version of the spirit.

The move also fits into the broader evolution of Varela Hermanos, a company with roots dating back to 1908. Its latest release shows how a heritage brand can refresh itself through craftsmanship and product innovation without abandoning the product that made it iconic.

Why It Matters

For Panama’s liquor market, the launch adds another locally made premium spirit with strong national branding. For consumers, it offers a new option that blends tradition with a more polished finish, reinforcing Seco Herrerano’s role as both a cultural symbol and a commercial brand.
