What Happened
Panama is facing the prospect of another El Niño event in 2026, a climate pattern that has repeatedly strained water supplies, agriculture and Canal operations. International forecasts point to a rising chance that the phenomenon could develop in the second half of the year, with conditions in the tropical Pacific still neutral for now.
In Panama, El Niño has historically brought reduced rainfall, lower river flows and pressure on the reservoirs that supply both the Canal and the capital. Past episodes in 1983, 1997, 2015-2016 and 2023-2024 left visible damage in farming regions, increased wildfire risk and exposed the country’s dependence on stable water resources.
Why El Niño Matters for Panama
El Niño is a natural climate phenomenon marked by warmer-than-normal surface waters in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific. That warming shifts atmospheric circulation and can change rainfall and temperature patterns across much of the world, including Central America.
For Panama, the concern is not only drought in the dry season but also the knock-on effects across the economy. The Arco Seco and other vulnerable areas can suffer sharply from less rain, while low lake levels can affect shipping through the Panama Canal and water availability for households in the Panama metropolitan area.
The 2023 dry season showed how quickly the situation can worsen. The Panama Canal Authority said October 2023 was the driest October since 1950, with roughly 40% less rain than normal. That forced operational restrictions to protect water reserves used for both maritime transit and public consumption.
What the Outlook Suggests
Forecasts now point to the possibility of El Niño emerging between May and July 2026 and continuing through the end of the year. Even with a season that has so far brought rain and full reservoirs, a shift in Pacific conditions could quickly change the outlook for the country.
Recent climate patterns in the region add urgency. The World Meteorological Organization has linked El Niño and high temperatures to severe drought conditions across large parts of Latin America and Central America, underscoring the risks for countries already exposed to water stress.
What Panama Needs to Do
The challenge for Panama is to prepare before drought conditions become severe. That means strengthening hydroclimatic monitoring, managing water demand and protecting the watersheds that supply the country’s rivers, lakes and aqueduct systems.
It also means planning across sectors, including rural water boards in vulnerable communities, so that local systems can keep working under tighter water conditions. The long-term answer lies in stronger water governance and climate planning, not only emergency measures once reservoirs begin to fall.
With El Niño a recurring threat, Panama’s water security depends on sustained preparation. The lessons of recent dry years show that anticipating the next drought is far less costly than reacting after the water has already run low.
