The Vatican has expressed regret to Israel’s ambassador to the Holy See, Yaron Sideman, over what it called the “unfortunate” decision to bar Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa from celebrating Palm Sunday Mass at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.

## The Dispute Over Holy Week Access

The Vatican said it took note of an agreement reached between the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem and local authorities concerning participation in the Easter Triduum ceremonies at the Holy Sepulchre. The dispute centered on Sunday’s decision to prevent access to the church for Cardinal Pizzaballa and Patriarch Francesco Ielpo, even though security restrictions had already limited attendance to 50 people because of the war with Iran.

## Netanyahu Reverses Course

The move sparked strong international criticism, prompting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to appear publicly late Sunday and reverse the decision. He said the cardinal would be allowed to enter, effectively walking back the earlier restriction.

The Vatican’s brief statement did not go beyond noting that “clarifications” were provided during the meeting with the ambassador. It also indicated that the Holy See had acknowledged the agreement reached on Holy Week celebrations.
