# Panamanian Police Seize 5,330 Rounds and Five Grenades in Vacamonte

## What Happened

Panama National Police located a cache of 5,330 rounds of ammunition and five grenades in Vacamonte, in the district of Arraiján, after a citizen alert pointed officers to the site.

Specialized police units went to the area and found the weapons materials inside an abandoned, isolated structure that local residents said is used as a hideout by criminals.

## What Was Found

Explosives specialists and personnel trained in handling high-caliber ammunition were called to the scene. Police also recovered ammunition magazines and shotgun ammunition during the operation.

Ballistics experts identified several types of ammunition among the seizure, including 9mm pistol rounds, shotgun shells, 5.56mm and 7.62mm rifle rounds, tracer bullets and propellant for grenade launchers.

## Why It Matters

The discovery points to the presence of military-grade firepower in a residential area on the outskirts of Panama’s capital region. Ammunition for rifles, grenade launchers and other high-powered weapons can be used in violent crime and presents a serious public safety risk when stored in unsecured locations.

Authorities are investigating where the ammunition came from and who it was intended for. The National Police and the Public Ministry are handling the case as part of the effort to determine whether the cache was tied to organized criminal activity.

## Broader Context

This was the largest ammunition seizure recorded so far this year, underscoring the scale of the problem faced by security forces in Panama’s fight against illegal arms circulation. Operations like this depend heavily on community reporting, which can help officers reach hidden storage sites before the contents are moved or used.
