# Panama Police Probe Alleged Internal Network Stealing and Selling Institutional Vehicles

## What Happened

Panama’s National Police say they are conducting internal disciplinary investigations after detecting a possible criminal network made up, allegedly, of police officers involved in the theft and illegal sale of institutional vehicles, motorcycles and accessories.

## Investigation Details

The inquiries are being handled by the Dirección de Responsabilidad Profesional, which has identified police units it believes are connected to the incidents. Authorities have not specified how many officers may be implicated.

On March 18, a joint operation was carried out by the Dirección de Responsabilidad Profesional together with the Dirección Nacional de Inteligencia Policial and the Dirección Nacional de Investigación Judicial, in coordination with the Ministerio Público. The National Police published a communiqué and posted about the matter on its Twitter account on March 20.

During search and seizure actions in the province of Chiriquí, specifically in the Boquerón and Los Algarrobos areas, officers recovered an institutional motorcycle that had been discarded and a Toyota Corolla that had been stolen from the Dirección de Responsabilidad Profesional facilities in Ancón. The operation also led to the apprehension of one civilian allegedly linked to the case, according to the institution.

## Background and Significance

Allegations of theft and illegal commercialization of state property by members of law enforcement strike at public trust and the integrity of policing institutions. The involvement of multiple police directorates and coordination with the Ministerio Público indicates the authorities are treating the matter as both a disciplinary and judicial concern.

Recovery of institutional assets — such as the motorcycle and the Toyota Corolla reported in this operation — is an immediate measure to limit loss, but the broader implications include potential criminal charges, internal disciplinary sanctions, and reviews of inventory and vehicle security procedures across police units.

## What This Means

The National Police’s ongoing investigations may result in administrative and criminal processes, though the institution has not provided details on timelines, the number of personnel under investigation, or further arrests. For the public, the case underscores ongoing challenges in safeguarding state resources and ensuring accountability within security forces. Observers and affected communities will likely monitor how rapidly the investigations proceed and whether reforms or stronger controls follow to prevent similar incidents.
