# West Panama Receives First 25,000 Flu Vaccine Doses as Immunization Drive Expands

## What Happened

The Ministry of Health has allocated 25,000 influenza vaccine doses for distribution across health facilities in the five districts of Panama West province. Of that total, 15,000 doses will be administered through the regional directorate of the ministry, while 10,000 will be sent to Social Security Fund polyclinics and local primary care units.

The rollout is intended to keep vaccine access available throughout the province’s health network as respiratory illnesses increase.

## Who Is Being Prioritized

The Expanded Program on Immunization identified children, older adults, and people with chronic conditions as the main at-risk groups targeted in this phase of vaccination.

That focus reflects the seasonal nature of influenza and the higher risk of complications for vulnerable populations, especially when circulation of respiratory viruses rises.

## What the Vaccine Covers

The first batch is part of a national purchase of 384,000 influenza doses designed to protect against the AH1N1, AH3N2, and B/Victoria strains currently circulating in the country. The World Health Organization updates vaccine composition each year because influenza mutates frequently.

Two additional shipments, totaling 384,000 and 98,000 doses, are expected to arrive in the coming days. Together, the deliveries will complete the purchase made to immunize the population against influenza.

## Why It Matters

Seasonal flu campaigns are a key public health tool in Panama, where vaccination helps reduce severe illness, pressure on clinics, and the spread of respiratory infections. Ensuring supply in both ministry-run facilities and Social Security centers broadens access for residents across Panama West.

As the vaccine reaches more health posts and clinics, the province’s immunization effort is positioned to move quickly, particularly among people most likely to develop complications from influenza.
