# Panama Metro Line 3 Enters Key Testing Phase as Full Fleet Arrives

## What Happened

Panama’s Metro Line 3 has reached a decisive stage after the arrival of all 26 monorail trains in the country and the start of formal testing scheduled for this month. The project is moving forward as a major mobility answer for thousands of commuters in Panama Oeste who face long daily travel times on the Inter-American Highway and the Bridge of the Americas.

The first train arrived on January 29, 2024, and the last of the 26 units reached the country on July 21, 2025. All of the trains entered through the port of Manzanillo in Colón province before being transported to Ciudad del Futuro in Panama Oeste, where they are now stored and assembled.

## Testing and Validation

The monorail fleet consists of 26 trains made up of six cars each. They have already gone through factory testing in Japan by Hitachi, Ltd., as part of the international certification process for the system.

In Panama, the trains have also completed dynamic and static validation work. On April 13, dynamic tests involving running, power and braking were carried out in the Ciudad del Futuro area, where one of the stations is located. Metro de Panamá has said the equipment is not sitting idle, but instead remains in a continuous testing cycle that includes routine monthly maintenance and contractor inspections.

The state company also said each unit will have a two-year factory warranty beginning with substantial acceptance of the system, the point at which the project is certified as functionally complete and ready to carry at least 100,000 people a day.

## Progress on the Works

Formal testing is expected to begin this month and will roll out gradually, first on specific stretches and later on full runs that reach the Albrook station. These trials are a key step before commercial service can begin.

On the infrastructure side, the elevated section is already more than 83% complete, and monorail testing has already started there. The tunnel beneath the Panama Canal has passed 60% completion, while the tunnel boring machine finished the first tunnel section in February after crossing 65 meters below the canal channel. The underground phase is now above 47% progress.

## Why Line 3 Matters

Line 3 is one of Panama’s most important transport projects and has been expected for more than a decade as a structural response to growth in the western corridor. The route will connect Ciudad del Futuro with Albrook and is expected to benefit more than 500,000 people.

The work is being carried out by HPH Joint Venture, and total investment in the project exceeds $4.481 billion. That amount includes construction, the 26 monorail trains valued at $286 million, and financing for the tunnel under the Panama Canal. With the fleet now in the country and testing underway, the project has entered one of its most closely watched phases.
