# Tocumen Braces for Easter Travel Surge With More Than 78,000 Passengers

## What Happened

Panama is expecting a heavy wave of air travel during Easter Week, with at least 15,000 travelers entering the country each day between Wednesday, April 1, and Sunday, April 5. The Tocumen International Airport projects 78,332 passengers in total over the holiday period, including both arrivals and departures.

According to the airport’s operational outlook, 40,932 passengers will depart and 37,400 will arrive in Panama, for a daily average of 15,666 travelers. The busiest day is expected to be Sunday, April 5, when 9,705 passengers are scheduled to depart and 8,876 are expected to arrive.

## Airport Preparation

Tocumen’s management said the terminal has strengthened coordination across the airport community to keep passenger flow orderly and safe during the peak travel period. The goal is to handle the seasonal rush as families travel to reunite or take short holidays across the Easter break.

José Ruiz, the airport’s manager, said the terminal is working to provide a fluid, orderly, and safe experience from the moment passengers arrive at Tocumen. Easter Week is one of the most active travel periods of the year for Panama’s main international gateway, and the expected volume reflects that seasonal demand.

## Top Destinations

The most in-demand international destinations this holiday are Bogotá and Medellín in Colombia, San José in Costa Rica, and Miami in the United States. Those routes typically draw strong demand from travelers leaving Panama for nearby regional trips and longer-haul connections.

Airlines are advising passengers to arrive at the airport at least three hours before their flights. That extra time is needed to complete check-in, baggage drop-off, security screening, immigration, customs, and boarding gate procedures.

## Why It Matters

The Easter travel rush is an important test for Tocumen, Panama’s busiest airport and a major regional hub. High passenger traffic can affect flight schedules, terminal operations, and border-control procedures, making advance planning essential for both airlines and travelers.

For Panama, the holiday movement also highlights the airport’s role as a key entry point for visitors and a central departure point for residents traveling abroad during major holiday periods.
