# Panama City road closures set for youth South American Games cycling and triathlon events

## What Happened

Temporary road closures are in effect in Panama City for cycling and triathlon competitions at the Juegos Suramericanos de la Juventud Panamá 2026. Traffic authorities say the measures are designed to protect athletes, technical staff, and spectators while the events take place in the capital.

The closures affect major public areas used for the competitions, including the Cinta Costera 3 and the Causeway of Amador. Motorists are being urged to plan ahead, use alternate routes, and follow instructions from traffic personnel during the scheduled events.

## Cycling Closures and Routes

Cycling events are concentrated along Cinta Costera 3, from the roundabout at the entrance to Casco Antiguo to the return near the Maracaná Stadium, including the marine section of the route. The schedule includes practice sessions and race days spread across several dates in April.

Closures for cycling are scheduled for Tuesday, April 14, and Wednesday, April 15, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. for road practices. On Thursday, April 16, the route will close from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for the women’s individual time trial at 10:00 a.m. and the men’s event at 11:00 a.m. A longer closure is planned for Saturday, April 18, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for the road race.

## Triathlon Operations in Amador and Cinta Costera 3

Triathlon will require closures on the Causeway of Amador and Cinta Costera 3, extending from the new bridge on the Causeway along the left side toward the Figali Convention Center. The Plaza de las Banderas area, where the transition zone and finish line are located, will also be part of the restricted area.

The triathlon schedule includes closures on Thursday, April 16, from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.; Friday, April 17, from 6:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for competition; Saturday, April 18, from 7:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.; and Sunday, April 19, from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for competition.

## Why It Matters

The road restrictions reflect the scale of the youth games and the logistical coordination needed to stage international competitions in Panama City. Events like cycling and triathlon rely on controlled routes, especially in high-traffic areas near the city’s coastal corridor and the Amador strip.

For residents and drivers, the closures may affect travel times along key connectors between central Panama City, Casco Antiguo, and the Amador area. Authorities are emphasizing caution and compliance with traffic guidance to reduce disruption and keep the competitions safe and orderly.
