# Panama Canal Delivers B/.2.965 Billion to National Treasury After Strong FY2025

## What Happened

In a ceremony in Colón, the Panama Canal Administration (ACP) handed over B/. 2.965 billion to Panama’s National Treasury. The amount represents surpluses from canal operations, transit tonnage fees and payments for public services provided by the state, according to the ACP.

## Financial Details

Following approval of the ACP’s financial statements for the fiscal year from October 1, 2024, to September 30, 2025, the board declared B/. 2.372 billion as the economic surplus from canal operations and B/. 591 million as revenue from transit tonnage fees. An additional B/. 2 million corresponds to public services provided by the state, bringing the total direct contribution to B/. 2.965 billion.

## Ceremony and Attendance

The handover took place at the Fleet and Equipment Administration and Maintenance Division facilities in the Atlantic sector. Ten canal employees representing the workforce presented the contributions to President José Raúl Mulino. The event included a tour of dry dock facilities, where the canal’s industrial equipment is maintained.

Officials attending included the Minister for Canal Affairs José Ramón Icaza; the Minister of Economy Felipe Chapman; Canal Administrator Ricaurte Vásquez Morales; and Deputy Administrator Ilya Espino de Marotta, among other guests.

## Background

The ACP highlighted that FY2025 marked a return to normal lake levels, which allowed the canal to maintain a 50-foot draft even during the dry season. That operational improvement contributed to an increase in average daily transits to 33, up from 27 the previous year, which had been affected by the El Niño phenomenon.

## What This Means

The transfer underscores the canal’s financial contribution to Panama’s public finances and the role of its workforce in sustaining operations. The ACP framed the contribution as the result of the dedication of thousands of canal employees who ensure efficient and safe passage through the interoceanic waterway.

President Mulino congratulated the Panama Canal workforce for their performance during a year with significant challenges and highlighted the canal’s capacity to confront complex issues, including those related to climate variability. With this delivery, the ACP reaffirmed its contribution to Panama’s comprehensive development.
