# Four Detained in Darien as Security Forces Dismantle Illegal Mining Camp

## What Happened

Security units dismantled an illegal mining camp in the headwaters of the Sábalo River in Darién province after an operation led by the 5th Special Forces Brigade of SENAFRONT. Four people were detained during the intervention.

Authorities seized plastic containers holding a yellow powder believed to be gold, along with motor pumps used as dredges, digital scales, and bags containing dried herb suspected to be illegal substances. The camp was also found to contain shovels, pans, and diving masks, tools commonly linked to unauthorized mineral extraction.

## Joint Operation in Darién

The operation involved the National Aeronaval Service, reflecting the coordinated effort often used in remote areas where illegal extraction activity can be difficult to detect and remove. After the camp was dismantled, the detainees were taken to the community of La Palma and placed under the orders of the Primary Care Prosecutor’s Office.

## Why It Matters

Illegal mining has long posed a threat to Panama’s forests, rivers, and protected areas, especially in the eastern province of Darién, where rugged terrain can make enforcement difficult. Operations like this are part of a broader state effort to curb environmental damage, reduce criminal activity in remote zones, and prevent the use of river systems for unauthorized extraction.

The presence of equipment used for dredging points to activity that can disturb riverbeds and water quality, while the seizure of suspected illicit substances raises the possibility of wider criminal links around the camp. The intervention underscores the role of security forces in confronting not only environmental crimes but also other offenses that may overlap with illegal mining networks.

## State Response

SENAFRONT reiterated its commitment to confronting illicit activities that threaten both the environment and public safety. In Darién, where access is limited and natural resources are vulnerable, enforcement operations remain a key tool in preventing further damage from unregulated extraction.
