# Fidel Escobar returns to training after back injury and keeps World Cup dream alive

## What Happened

Panamanian defender Fidel Escobar has returned to training after overcoming a back hernia that sidelined him since December. The Saprissa center-back and Panama national team player is now focused on rebuilding his fitness and working back toward his best competitive level.

Escobar described the recovery as a long and demanding process, saying he is happy to be back on the field with teammates and gradually resuming full training sessions. He noted that while he is not yet at full strength, he is making steady progress.

## A Career-Defining Injury

The injury represented the longest absence of Escobar’s professional career. He explained that while he has dealt with other setbacks before, such as a muscle tear or an ankle problem, those recoveries were much shorter and less difficult than this one.

According to his own account, the back issue kept him out for nearly three months and forced him into a structured rehabilitation program. That process included gym work, strengthening exercises, and readaptation work aimed at reducing discomfort after training.

## Support From Saprissa and Panama

Escobar said he received strong support from Saprissa’s medical staff throughout the recovery, including physiotherapists, a readaptation specialist, and the club doctor. He also pointed out that the club’s doctor maintained communication with Panama’s national team doctor during the process.

His family also played an important role, and Escobar specifically thanked his wife for helping him through the emotional strain that came with such a lengthy recovery. The defender said faith and patience were important parts of getting through the injury.

## World Cup 2026 Remains the Goal

Beyond returning to club action, Escobar is keeping one eye on the road to the 2026 World Cup. The Panamanian defender said playing in another World Cup remains a childhood dream, one he already experienced in 2018 and hopes to repeat if he earns a place in the squad.

He stressed, however, that the priority is to prepare properly before thinking about the tournament. For Escobar, staying healthy and regaining peak condition are essential steps if he wants to contribute to Panama’s national team plans.

## Contact With Thomas Christiansen

Escobar also confirmed that he recently spoke briefly with Panama coach Thomas Christiansen about his recovery. The conversation focused on his physical condition, how his back was responding, and the seriousness of the injury.

With training back underway and rehabilitation still continuing, Escobar is now moving into the next phase of his comeback. For both Saprissa and Panama, his return adds an experienced option in defense as he works to recover full match rhythm.
