# Gina de Sáenz Takes the Helm at Canal Bank to Lead Growth and Governance Push

## What Happened

Canal Bank has appointed Gina de Sáenz as its new Gerente General (General Manager), signaling the start of a renewed phase focused on institutional strength, corporate governance and sustainable growth within Panama’s financial system. The bank said the move is part of a broader strategy to consolidate its position in the market.

## Background

De Sáenz brings more than 35 years of experience in banking and financial services. Most recently, she spent nine years as Executive Vice President and General Manager of Banco Delta, where she led the institution that became a reference in Panama’s microfinance sector. Over her career she has directed areas including business, strategic planning, operations, technology, human resources and processes, and has overseen the execution of strategic plans and organizational transformation projects.

The appointment comes after Canal Bank received additional capital contributions of US$45 million in 2025, funds the bank says are aimed at supporting its growth and strengthening its market position.

## Leadership Statements

Gerardo García, President of Canal Bank’s Board of Directors, framed the hire as a move to reinforce the bank’s strategic management in an increasingly demanding financial environment. “Nos complace dar la bienvenida a Gina de Sáenz como Gerente General de Canal Bank. Su amplia trayectoria en el sistema financiero panameño, su liderazgo probado y su profundo conocimiento del negocio bancario serán fundamentales para seguir fortaleciendo nuestra institución, consolidar nuestra estrategia de crecimiento y continuar generando valor para nuestros clientes, colaboradores y accionistas,” García said.

De Sáenz also commented on her new role, expressing commitment to disciplined, strategic leadership and close engagement with clients and staff: “Es un honor asumir este reto junto al equipo de Canal Bank. Mi compromiso es trabajar con disciplina, visión estratégica y cercanía con nuestros clientes y colaboradores para seguir construyendo una institución sólida, confiable y preparada para el futuro.”

## What This Means

Canal Bank’s selection of a seasoned executive with a track record in governance and microfinance highlights the bank’s intent to balance growth with prudence and regulatory compliance. The capital injections in 2025 provide financial backing for that strategy, while leadership with deep local experience aims to strengthen the bank’s institutional capabilities.

For Panama’s wider banking sector, the move underscores ongoing emphasis on transparency, institutional solidity and compliance as competitive differentiators. Canal Bank says the new leadership will focus on consolidating its value proposition to customers and continuing the development of a responsible, client-focused banking model.
