# Former Colón Mayor Alex Lee Detained Again in Descentralization Case

## What Happened

Alex Lee, the former mayor of the district of Colón and a member of the Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD), was detained on Wednesday morning, April 22. He is linked to an investigation involving the decentralization system and alleged misuse of public funds.

Lee had previously been arrested in May 2024 at Tocumen International Airport as he prepared to travel to Medellín, Colombia. The earlier detention was tied to a separate phase of the same broader judicial matter.

## Background to the Case

Lee was already under scrutiny for an alleged embezzlement offense affecting the Barrio Sur corregimiento board in Colón. Prosecutors have said the case involves the possible misuse of $214,000 during the 2009-2014 period.

That money came from a special allocation provided by the Ministry of Economy and Finance for social matters. The investigation has focused on how those public resources were handled during Lee’s time in office.

## Why It Matters

The case has drawn attention because it involves a former municipal authority in one of Panama’s most important Caribbean provinces and raises questions about oversight of decentralization funds. Cases involving the use of public money in local governments often become politically sensitive, especially when they involve elected figures tied to major parties such as the PRD.

Lee’s second detention adds another chapter to a case that has already moved through multiple stages and continues to spotlight accountability in the management of social spending at the local level. The proceedings also reflect the broader pressure on Panamanian institutions to investigate alleged corruption involving public funds.
