What Happened
Panama’s National Civil Protection System activated a prevention notice for the Caribbean coast as wave heights of up to 2.2 meters are expected this weekend. The measure follows a forecast from the Panama Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology.
The warning is in effect from 7:00 a.m. on May 16 through 11:59 p.m. on May 17, 2026.
Why the Alert Matters
High waves on the Caribbean side can affect coastal activity, especially small boats, beachgoers, and communities exposed to rougher sea conditions. Prevention notices are used to reduce risks during periods of stronger swells and changing maritime conditions.
For Panama, these advisories are especially important along the Caribbean coast, where marine conditions can shift quickly and affect navigation, fishing, and recreational activities.
What Residents and Visitors Should Keep in Mind
People near the coast are encouraged to pay attention to official safety guidance and plan around the expected sea conditions. Maritime operators and those heading to beaches or ports should remain alert during the advisory window.
Weather and sea alerts are a routine part of coastal safety management in Panama, where both the Caribbean and Pacific sides can face different conditions at the same time.
