Power and Pageantry: Cabalgata in David and Two High‑Profile Weddings Draw Panama’s Political Class

What Happened

Over a single weekend Panama’s political and business elite converged at public and private events: the main cabalgata in David, Chiriquí, and two high‑profile weddings — one in Boquete and another in La Cresta in Panama City. The gatherings brought together elected officials, party leaders, businesspeople and foreign guests in visible displays of social and political networking.

Who Was There

In David the flagbearer of the cabalgata honoring San José was Alberto Jurado, owner of the construction firm Bagatrac, a company named among those implicated in the Blue Apple corruption case. Jurado, also known as Beto Bagatrac, has admitted to paying more than $3 million in bribes to officials from the administration of Ricardo Martinelli (2009–2014), and Bagatrac secured tens of millions of dollars in contracts during the government of Laurentino Cortizo (2019–2024).

Jurado rode the parade alongside Joaquín De León, mayor of David. On the main stage were PRD figures such as Benicio Robinson, the party president and a longtime associate of Jurado, and deputy Raúl Pineda. Former Panama City mayor José Luis Fábrega and ex‑minister Inés Samudio were also present, as were family and close associates including Jesenka Espinosa, Jurado’s partner, and advertising businessman Mario Barletta.

Members of the Vamos movement and several deputies were visible in the procession: Juan Diego Vásquez, Augusto “Tuto” Palacios, Jhonathan Vega, Jorge González, Jorge Bloise, Roberto Zúñiga, Janine Prado and Luis Duque, among others. José Pérez Barboni, president of the Infrastructure and Canal Affairs Commission, was also in attendance. Former presidential hopefuls Ricardo Lombana and Martín Torrijos appeared separately during the event.

The Weddings

Two weddings followed the weekend’s public celebrations. In Boquete, former deputy Gabriel Silva married Sophia Nandwani with members of the Vamos group among the guests. In La Cresta, U.S. Ambassador Kevin Marino Cabrera married Andrea Altamirano Duque. That reception drew figures from the executive branch — including President José Raúl Mulino, Security Minister Frank Ábrego, Panama City Mayor Mayer Mizrachi and Comptroller Anel Flores — as well as U.S. political visitors such as Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar and Florida lawmaker José Félix Díaz.

Background and Context

The gatherings highlight the overlap between social events and political life in Panama. The presence of individuals linked to past corruption allegations, party leaders and high‑level government officials at the same public and private functions underscores how networking, patronage and public optics converge in both provincial and capital settings.

What This Means

Observers may view these events as routine political engagement and celebration. At the same time, the attendance of business figures tied to past investigations alongside current officials raises questions about transparency and the appearance of impropriety. For now, the weekend stands as a reminder of how political influence in Panama often plays out in public festivities as well as private ceremonies.
