Panama Canal Sees Largest-Ever Passenger Ship Transit as Disney Adventure Passes Through Agua Clara

Disney Adventure cruise ship transiting the Panama Canal's Agua Clara Locks as a commemorative plaque is presented

What Happened

The Panama Canal marked a milestone on Monday, Feb. 2, 2026, when the Neopanamax cruise ship Disney Adventure completed its inaugural transit of the interoceanic waterway. At 208,000 gross tons and with capacity for approximately 6,700 passengers, the vessel is the largest passenger ship by capacity and gross tonnage to pass through the canal.

Panama Canal Administrator Ricaurte Vásquez Morales presented a commemorative plaque to the Disney Adventure as she moved through the Agua Clara Locks in the province of Colón, recognizing the transit as a key achievement for the waterway and the cruise industry.

Details of the Vessel and Transit

The Disney Adventure measures 342 meters in length with a beam of 46.4 meters. The ship, added to the Disney Cruise Line fleet in 2025 and built at Meyer Werft in Germany, is homeported in Singapore and operates three- and four-night itineraries. She features roughly 2,111 staterooms, a crew of about 2,500, and onboard attractions including bow artwork with Captain Mickey, Marvel Landing, the longest roller coaster at sea, and the Disney Imagination Garden with a three-deck castle installation.

The transit required extensive multidisciplinary coordination by canal teams and highlighted the Panama Canal’s capacity to manage very large passenger vessels with precision, safety and efficiency.

Why It Matters

The Disney Adventure surpasses the previous record-holder, Norwegian Bliss, which transited the canal at 168,000 gross tons and a capacity of 5,000 passengers. The new transit represents an increase of about 24 percent in gross tonnage—roughly 40,000 gross tons—over that earlier benchmark.

Officials framed the milestone as an affirmation of the canal’s logistical appeal for global connectivity and for high-value tourism itineraries. The passage underlines the waterway’s role in accommodating evolving ship designs and larger cruise operations.

Outlook and Context

The Disney Adventure is one of five ships completing their inaugural transits during the 2025–2026 cruise season, alongside AIDAdiva, Brilliant Lady, Celebrity Ascent, and Star Seeker. For fiscal year 2026, the Panama Canal Authority expects more than 40 Neopanamax cruise ship transits, reflecting growing cruise traffic among very large vessels.

As cruise lines continue to commission larger ships with expanded amenities and capacities, the canal’s operations and infrastructure are being tested and showcased by high-profile transits such as the Disney Adventure. The ceremony at Agua Clara emphasized both the commercial significance of these movements and the collaborative work required to integrate them into canal schedules.
